Ultrasonography
Our hospital is fully equipped with an ultrasound scanner to evaluate your pet’s condition. Our veterinarians carefully examine your pet and discuss their case to determine if diagnostic imaging is needed. This procedure is a vital tool for identifying issues in soft tissues, such as the abdomen or heart, and helps us provide accurate and timely care.
What is an ultrasound scan?
This painless procedure uses high-frequency sound waves (inaudible to humans) to create images of the body’s internal structures. Some sound waves bounce back while others are absorbed by tissues. The machine measures the returning waves and produces images on a screen, which can be printed or recorded. Proper use and interpretation of these scans require extensive veterinary training.
Imaging works best on soft or fluid-filled organs like the liver, kidneys, bladder, and heart. It is less effective for bones or air-filled organs, such as the lungs.
What happens to my pet when it is booked in for an ultrasound scan?
Most pets stay in the hospital for the day to complete the procedure, unless it is an emergency. Please bring your pet unfed in the morning, as sedation may sometimes be necessary for accurate imaging.
Our team will shave the area to be examined, so your pet may look slightly different afterward. The scan itself is painless, though your pet may feel light pressure. Sedation may be used for pets that struggle to stay still or feel uncomfortable. During the procedure, we apply a water-soluble gel over the clipped area and use a transducer (probe) on the skin.
After the scan, our veterinarians will call you or schedule an appointment to review the images and discuss your pet’s diagnosis and treatment plan.
